Right so we’ve established that the n95 is pretty awsome. So rather than regurgitating what has been said in many reviews already i’m going to dispel a couple of accusations
The n95 suffers from poor battery life.
While this is true to some extent, it is unfair to say that the battery performance is poor. The n95 can have a lot of stuff going on at any one time, however this is not always necessary. On average the phone is lasting me over two days on a single charge though I do tend to charge it each night for the sake of it. Regardless if you only use one function at a time and turn it off afterwards you can manage the power quite well.
The n95 has a defective wobbly screen.
It did.. until I fixed it with a hidden piece of cellotape, now when you slide the screen its nice and solid.
There are loads of guides on the net showing you how to do this, the wobble is bareable anyway and is just part of the design of this phone, if it annoys you it takes 5 minutes to fix with the right tools.
GPS takes ages to lock on.
I have played about with the GPS quite a bit, and unless I’m inside a building the GPS receiver locks on after about 10 seconds.. pretty good for a phone if you ask me.
Here are some other cool things that you can do on the n95, and many other symbian based smartphones.
Assign multiple email accounts,, using imap/pop3. I currently have my gmail hooked up and the imap works great, as soon as an email arrives my phone tells me.
QR Code reader, this is quite a funky little app that the n95 has which allows you to use the camera to read QR codes. If you scroll to the very bottom of my website there is a black and white box with some odd patterns, this is a QR code, it has a message encoded into it which you can read with a QR scanner, sounds pointless but it does have it’s uses!
Run msn messenger, does what it says on the tin. Or any other instant messaging client as apps are available for all of these.
Play games like Quake/Quake II and other cool 3d ported games, also you can get emulators for the likes of the gameboy and snes etc so you can play any of the thousands of ROMs available.
Run google maps and use either the phone signal or the built in gps to locate yourself on a map or satelite view (streamed over internet) which is pretty cool ! There is also the built in nokia mapping software which works well too.
Using the phone camera I can take good photos and am able to upload them directly to my flickr photo stream over whatever connection is available 3g/gprs/WiFi
The built in web browser on this phone is almost perfect. It has a mouse like cursor that makes selecting links very easy, pages render well and generally pretty quickly. The only other browser I tried was Opera which was pretty good, but lacked the cursor.
The media functions are great, with a good sized memory card you can have a shedload of videos, music, photos etc. The phone also supports TV out so you can use a television to display the phones screen, there’s something quite mind boggling about playing quake on your tv, using the phone as both the console and the controller.
Accelerometer, did I mention that the n95 has a similar motion detection system to a wii controller? There are already applications appearing that take advantage of this.
All in all I could praise this phone for a long time and i’ve merely scratched the surface a little, I think there are probably a lot of people out there who have bought this phone but would never use it to its full potential but if you take a look at what you could be doing with it there’s a lot of stuff to try out.
